Please Read and Respond

Teachers were asked to reach out to every family to obtain the following information:

Does your child have internet access?
What is the total number of students in the house?
What kind of device(s) / technology do they have access to?

Please respond to my email (If you haven't already) christine.lay@leominsterschools.org
Thank you for your continued support!

I also quickly want to address a question I have received from both students and parents. Currently I am not able to video chat with students as they are minors. Administration is looking into this through the guidance of DESE. I would LOVE to be able to see and talk with the students, but legally cannot do so.... YET! Thank you for understanding!

Update

I hope this update meets everyone feeling healthy. With school being out for longer, I want you to know that the fifth grade team and I are constantly talking about what the next steps are for our classrooms. I am currently waiting for more guidance from the district, and will connect with the students on the specifics ASAP.

The challenge right now, and really every day of the school year, is that each of my students have different needs, challenges, successes, and goals which can change minute by minute throughout a school day.

My goal  for this time will be to have the students consistently practice what we have learned, so that when we get back we can really focus on new material to prepare for sixth grade! Students can submit any "work" on google docs, or even take a picture and send it. I will be more specific about this over the weekend.

I have been  communicating mainly through the students' gmail accounts. I will also send periodic emails to parents as well. Please make sure your child can access their Leominster gmail account. I still have seven students that I haven't heard from at all.

Thank you so much for your patience and support at this time! Please reach out to me, or have your child reach out to me, with any questions, or if they need help on a specific assignment or topic!  I understand how difficult it is to keep a "schedule."   I am a STRUGGLING with teaching/ helping with first grade "vowel teams."

Below is the email I sent to the students
Hi guys!
WELL I guess it will be a while until we see each other! ahh! This is super tough, but before we know it we'll be back in room 30 dealing with all of our shenanigans!
With that being said, starting next week I am going to start giving specific assignments each day! You can still work on the packets or symphony math etc, but I want to be able to see what you are working on, so I can give some feedback!
At this point, when we return to school, we are going to be really focusing on getting you ready for sixth grade!

So please email me to let me know you can log in to:
Pearson
Symphony
WONDERS

I am also going to be signing our class up for a more standards based/ game math site. I'm thinking it will be easier/ more fun that symphony!

I miss you all!!!!!!! <-- I even used wrong grammar!

Weekly Update

Good Afternoon,
With school being closed for the next THREE weeks, I want to update parents and students on our "room 30 plan." The students have worked so hard this year, so it is so disheartening to interrupt the "momentum." I am going to provide a variety of suggestions for kids to use/ work on during these next three weeks! At the beginning of next week, I will try to gather some new/ specific ideas for home!  Every day at school they have a MINIMUM of 90 minutes of reading and writing and 90 minutes of math, so don't let the complaints fool you :)!! I am going to be sending students an e-mail as well. They can email me with any questions, ideas, or just to check in! I am home with a fifth grader as well, so I understand what you are going through! :) Stay healthy! Please e-mail me (or have the kids e-mail me) with any questions!

Our Daily Schedule:

9-10:30- Math
10:30-11:10- Specials
11:10-11:25- Snack/ break
11:25-12- Enrichment
12-1-ELA
1-1:40 Recess / Lunch
1:40-2:15- ELA
2:15-3 Science/ Social Studies

Suggestions:

  • Pearson Website Math games
  • Symphony Math
  • Lexia reading program
  • Typing Game Online
  • Read a fiction novel ( I will be assigning a book project after April Vacation!)
  • Work on any of the papers in the provided "E-Bag"
  • Look at the moon every night and draw what it looks like in a blank calendar (printed or created by them!)

Update

Students went home today with a packet that contains some fifth grade material to work on if we don't have school for any amount time. This material was provided by the the Leominster School District. The students and I discussed that this is not a requirement from me, but IF we are out of school for an extended amount of time, I encouraged them to complete some of the work.
There are some answer keys (that the students found VERY fast!) within the packet. Feel free to use the material as a way to earn screen time as well!

IF we do not have school, I told the students I would be emailing them throughout the week as well!

Try to enjoy your weekend!
